Prince Among Slaves: Black History Month 2015

Dear Educator:

You are cordially invited to participate in a limited time opportunity to receive the award-winning PBS film, Prince Among Slaves: The true story of an AfricanPrince enslaved in the American South. When you agree to screen this documentary by March 15th, 2015, and evaluate the classroom discussion, you will receive the DVD or a link to stream the film free of charge. This special offer is courtesy of Unity Productions Foundation (UPF), the makers of Prince Among Slaves. The offer is eligible to all United States-based high school and college educators. We have created lesson plans to accompany the film that meet national teaching standards for high school.

To support the extensive educational opportunities around Prince Among Slaves, UPF and our content development team have developed lesson plans for high school teachers that meet national teaching standards. Beyond resources from UPF's general donors, our efforts have received prior funding from the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Lesson Plans and Teaching Material

Upon signing up to screen Prince Among Slaves in your classroom, you can download a series of lesson plans, including a discussion guide. These lessons meet national teaching standards for high school and college educators are welcome to participate in this free offer. The lessons focus on three thematic areas:  Identity, Muslims in Early America and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. Materials are suitable for grade levels 9 through 12 in the subjects of history, geography, language arts, and arts. Two 50 minute class periods are typically required to cover the lesson plan.
